Most halfway houses, regardless of whether they are accredited or not, do a great job at helping a person stay sober, and can assist a person in reconnecting with family, and also becoming a contributor to society. Many Halfway Residences operate without a license simply because the licensing organization and/or the zoning percentage prevent halfway houses from operating in their areas by restricting census (total amount of residents in any single location or house). What is most crucial is how they go about helping people to stay sober and keeping residents on track- what is their main focus, making money or helping people- this is normally the key difference between a good run halfway house and a poorly run center. There are many questions to ask to determine the difference between the two. Draught beer staying on top of their resident’s sobriety? Exactly how do they maintain a clean and sober environment, etc.? Do they have rules? Do you know the rules? How do they enforce them? Always ask to see a copy of the rules!!! Could they be a coed facility? Usually, a male or women only halfway house has better odds at sustaining sobriety and dealing with length of stay issues.
To commence with, let us tell you that this article is proceeding to smash any preconceived ideas out there regarding starting a halfway house in america. You do not desire a license, permit, or any other document to open a halfway house. If any person, government official, government agency, zoning commission, and so forth tells you otherwise, they are doing illegitimate and unfair practices. Just for a hypothetical situation; let’s say that 3 people who have depression decide to become roommates in a home. Should they be closed down and kicked out of the neighborhood because of their disability? Does that imply they have to get a license or permit to stay? Needless to say not. Havingchemically dependent people in a home is no different!!! Alcoholics and addicts have similar laws to protect them.
It is a well known fact that City Councils have tried to stop halfway houses in their neighborhoods by stating that a halfway house with alcoholics and/or addicts, in other words disabled individuals, (and alcoholics and lovers qualify as disabled under the ADA), must not have roommates (as in 2 people in a room at a house), which prevents most midway houses from opening.
Medicine and alcohol rehabilitation facilities are a great commence to overcoming addiction. They can change lives, save families and most importantly; prevent some addicts from a tragic and untimely dying. Rehab centers remove the addict from their damaging environments, their access to dealers and their bad influences disguised as friends. As wonderful as Rehab Centers are, once the program is completed the addict needs to take those tools and use them in their daily life, that can be an extremely difficult transition for most.
